Police Search For Hotel Rape Suspect
By Bay City News, Inc
May 6 - San Francisco police released a sketch and description
of a man wanted in connection with Monday's armed rape-robbery
at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, noting the attack was "not
a random act."
The man, who had an unspecified "pre-existing connection"
to the victim, apparently used a ruse to get into her room
at the downtown hotel sometime before the sexual assault was
reported at 3 p.m., according to Lt. Rich Corriea of the police
sex crimes unit. Dressed in a black suit with a white shirt
and gray-and-red tie, the assailant was very neat, but not
dressed in a hotel-worker's uniform.
"The suspect is very dangerous," Corriea concluded
during the news conference at the Hall of Justice.
But he also said he wanted to assure hotel guests and San
Francisco residents who have been justifiably concerned since
the crime was reported that the attack was planned, not something
that resulted from a person randomly knocking on hotel doors.
He said the woman, who was taken to a hospital after she
was attacked, is doing "as well as can be expected"
and will probably not suffer any permanent physical injuries.
Asked if the victim may have been working for an escort service,
Corriea said he did not wish to get into what sort of work
she did. "The victim's background is not relevant to
the fact that she has been the victim of a felonious assault,"
he said.
While reassuring hotel guests that this appears to be an
isolated incident, police and a representative of the safety
group San Francisco SAFE urged visitors in general not to
drop their guard once they are on the premises of a hotel.
In particular, any unexpected visitor knocking on a room's
door should lead to a request that identification be slid
under the door or a call to the front desk to check for legitimacy.
The suspect is described as the following:
Light-skinned black male
About 30 years old
Between 6'3" and 6'5" tall
300 lbs.
Brown eyes with green flecks
Last seen wearing a black suit, white shirt and red and grey
tie
