I am continually amazed and a little confused at how our society as a whole treats the topic of sexual violence. First of all, it’s a topic we’re not supposed to talk about. Sure, we can talk about sex. We can talk about safe sex, when people should have sex, why we should decide for ourselves when to have sex, etc… We even spend time in school talking about sex. We can also talk about violence: how we’re affected by violence, how to prevent violence, and such. And yet, when you bring these two terms together – sexual violence – people start to get uncomfortable. This prevalence of silence helps enable this type of violence, this trauma, to continue. [..]
